The catalogue for the major Cartier retrospective held at the Grand Palais in Paris from December 2013 to February 2014. At 400 pages it is one of the most substantial recent surveys of Cartier's output, spanning the full range of the house's production from the late nineteenth century to the present and drawing on the Cartier Collection for illustration.

The retrospective was conceived as a broad survey of Cartier's stylistic development — how the house's aesthetic evolved across successive periods and how the Collection documents that evolution. The catalogue treats jewellery, watches, and objects together, with essays on period styles and the major design influences: the Garland Style, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, the Egyptian Revival, Persian and Islamic influence, and the Indian commissions.

Inhalt

The full span of the Cartier Collection's holdings, organised by period and design theme. Extensive illustration of pieces from the Collection, many reproduced at large scale. The scholarly apparatus includes catalogue entries with provenance, material analysis, and bibliographic citations, making it a useful reference for individual pieces in addition to the overview essays.

Bezugsquellen

The primary edition is in French. An English-language edition was produced for the international market. Both circulate secondhand; the French edition is more easily found in Paris and European markets, the English edition in the UK and US. The exhibition attracted wide coverage and the catalogue was widely distributed.
